Bilbao has changed radically over the last 20 years, from a totally industrial city to an avant-garde destination where the traditional and the contemporary go hand in hand. The old iron mines have given way to the titanium giant, the Guggenheim Museum, which has placed the city in the cultural spotlight.
On this tour, with the help of some pedal power, you’ll discover where the city was born and head all the way to the last neighborhood along the estuary, all while learning about how the city has made the transformation from industrial to contemporary along the way.
As we ride, we’ll spot some of the best sights in the city, including Frank Gehry’s masterpiece, the Guggenheim Museum. You’ll also learn about how this impressive museum represents the past, present, and future of Bilbao.
Pedaling along the cycle path, we continue from the old docks to Congress Palace, which symbolizes the last ship built in the city’s old shipyards. We’ll also see the Maritime Museum with its dry docks.
Our cycle tour continues to San Mames Stadium, known as one of the best sports buildings in the world and home to the city’s football club. The stadium (also known as the Cathedral of Football) holds a lot of Bilbao’s heritage, as well as represents our link to England and the iron mines, and what Basque Country is all about.
We will then cross over Euskalduna Bridge to start cycling back. On the way, your guide will point out a symbol of Bilbao, a tiger sitting atop a building overlooking the city, and a painting with the message of peace and love among all citizens. The last stop will be for some award-winning pintxos (traditional tapas) and a drink in a local bar to refuel after your bike ride.
The tour ends here, but before you go, don’t forget to ask your guide about what else to see and do in Bilbao.
